Carleton Varney, one of America’s best-known interior designers, is the president and owner of Dorothy Draper & Company, Inc. located in New York City. It is the oldest established and con1nuous interior design firm in the United States and is named acer the founder of the company, Dorothy Draper, one of the doyennes of interior design in the United States from the 1920’s to the 1960’s. The Varney design philosophy stresses the use of bright colors and the rejec1on of all that is imprac1cal, uncomfortable and drab. In embracing this prac1ce, he con1nues the tradi1on of Dorothy Draper by being associated with the imaginative use of vibrant colors, floral patterns and bold contrasts. Varney is associated with the restora1on and decora1on of countless hotels and resorts all over the world, among them: Adare Manor, Dromoland and Ashford Castles (Ireland); The Waldorf Towers and Plaza Hotel (New York); Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island (Michigan) ; The Colony and The Breakers in Palm Beach (Florida), and The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs (West Virginia). In years past, he was the design consultant to the Carter Presiden1al Library and for numerous State func1ons at the White House.He also restored and redecorated the Official Vice President’s Residence in Washington D.C., the Governor’s Mansion in West Virginia, and the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Tokyo, Japan. His versa1lity in design can be seen in the wide range of products that have borne his mark, ranging from fabrics, wallpapers, scarves, carpets, furniture, ligh1ng, dinner ware, crystal, and linen designs. His line of fabric designs for Dorothy Draper Fabrics & Wallcoverings grace the private residences of his impressive roster of clients which include superstars from the worlds of entertainment (Joan Crawford, Van Johnson, Jimmy Nederlander), poli1cs (Presidents Carter and Bush, Vice President Quayle), royalty (Princess Yasmin Aga Khan), and business (Rockefeller).
Carleton Varney is the author of over thirty books on interior design and also two novels, Kiss the Hibiscus Good Night and The Decorator. He is also the author of a well loved weekly syndicated newspaper column with The Palm Beach Daily News, t1tled “Your Family Decorator.” His original design blog now appears on CarletonVarney.com. One of his recent books Mr. Color is a 1tle bestowed on him for his bold use of color.
Varney was named in 2005 as one of 30 Deans of American Design by Architectural Digest and has been featured in the magazine over 25 1mes. In 2015, the Las Vegas Interna1onal Market awarded him the Design Icon of 2015. He is a member of the Interior Design magazine Hall of Fame. He has received the Tommy Award, Shelby Williams Award and Restaurant, and Hotel Design Pla1num Circle Award for his interior designs to name a few.
A nat1ve son of Lynn, Massachusetts, he was educated at Oberlin College, Ohio, where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts degree – and the University of Madrid, Spain. He obtained his Master of Arts degree at New York University. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Charleston, West Virginia, and founded the Carleton Varney School of Art & Design in that ins1tu1on. Carleton Varney is also the proud father of three sons, Nicholas, Seamus, and Sebas1an.
